The EQ Positive Impact Portfolios are for investors who care about how and where their money is invested. The best companies have always been the ones that innovate, find new ways to serve real needs and solve real problems. At EQ we wanted to capture these impact investment opportunities. Whilst there were plenty of ethical funds, we identified a growing demand from retail investors for a discretionary managed model portfolio approach.
In response, EQ designed a unique investment strategy called positive impact. This led to the launch of EQ’s Positive Impact Portfolios in 2012 and they have been a terrific success, both in terms of performance and popularity.
Our quarterly update focuses on specific investments made by the funds within the Positive Impact Portfolios. This update concentrates on three of them: Clean fuels (powering electric vehicles), social change (tackling high re-offending rates) and water (addressing an increasing shortage).
In response to growing demand, EQ Investors (EQ) designed a unique investment strategy called Positive Impact. The best companies have always been the ones that innovate, find new ways to serve real needs and solve real problems, and we wanted to capture these impact investment opportunities.
EQ Investors (EQ) is an award-winning boutique wealth manager, led by John Spiers, the founder of Bestinvest. We provide financial advice and investment management to individuals, small companies and charities around the UK.
EQ is an experienced provider of discretionary fund management (DFM) model portfolios. We offer access to diversified investment portfolios that cater for investors with different preferences and risk appetites.
Achieving good investment returns requires an excellent team. Our experienced portfolio managers have a proven track record of managing multi-asset portfolios and are supported by a highly skilled team of investment research analysts.
Our DFM and bespoke service allows external advisers to effectively outsource the day-to-day management of clients’ portfolios, freeing up time to focus on what they do best: maintaining client relationships and dealing with non-investment issues such as effective tax planning.
All of our portfolios are based around collective investments because we are convinced that is the best way to maximise performance. Our allocations to assets are driven by our analysis of fundamental value and our fund selection techniques incorporate sophisticated analysis of track records coupled with intensive interviews of each manager.
Global issues, global opportunities.
The EQ Positive Impact Portfolios focus investment on solutions to the most pressing social and environmental issues of our time. They can be used as a stand-alone option for those who view social and environmental considerations as paramount to their investment objectives, or as separate specialist portfolios.
OUR INVESTMENT SOLUTIONS
POSITIVE IMPACT MODEL PORTFOLIOS
Our Positive Impact approach is available through seven risk graded model portfolios from as little as £1,000. They follow a very rigorous investment process where only the funds with the highest impact on the society and or the environment are selected.
Each model portfolio has been built to achieve different investment objectives and the equity allocation ranges from 35% for the Cautious Portfolio up to 98% for the High Octane Portfolio. Portfolios typically invest in 20 to 25 funds, covering a range of styles, asset classes and fund management groups.
The EQ Positive Impact Portfolios are available on a number of platforms at a cost of 0.35% + VAT.
POSITIVE IMPACT BESPOKE SERVICE
EQ Positive Impact Bespoke portfolios is based on the same investment process than the model portfolios but designed for clients with large sums to invest. We still use funds to implement our investment choices but these may include ‘closed end’ vehicles such as investment trusts or REITs. You can also hold other Execution Only, or Advisory portfolios, within the overall account.
Tailoring your investment portfolio also enables us to make the best use of tax allowances – ensuring that taxable income is derived, where possible, in tax sheltered accounts such as ISAs and that full use is made of annual CGT allowances.
Portfolios now available on Nucleus and Transact.
EQ is pleased to announce that its popular Positive Impact Portfolios are now available for financial advisers to access via the Transact and Nucleus. The portfolios are also available via the Novia and Alliance Trust platforms with further announcements due imminently.
Through our Amity Funds we have worked with EQ Investors and their research team for a number of years and have been regularly impressed by their fund review process, the depth of their research and their commitment to providing leading sustainable investment portfolios for clients.

Positive impact. Strong financial returns.
The EQ Positive Impact Portfolios are not just about selecting investments that do good, they are also about selecting good investments. The seven risk adjusted model portfolios range from ‘Cautious’ for the most risk-adverse to ‘High Octane’ for the most risk-seeking. Each portfolio is invested in a well-diversified mix of 20 to 25 funds and actively managed by EQ.
Increasingly investors wish to see their savings put to work to build a sustainable economy, as well as a nest egg for their future. EQ’s approach to identifying positive environmental investment opportunities is well aligned with such objectives and we are delighted that Impax’s funds align with their approach.
