Helping individuals, charities and financial advisers to look forward with confidence.

Rathbones are one of the UK’s leading providers of investment management services for individuals, charities and professional advisers. As part of Rathbone Brothers PLC, an independently owned FTSE 250 company, they offer a true whole of market service. Their forward looking investment process is focused on personal outcomes and supported by genuine active management. They also offer a host of additional services. All of this from a stable firm with a long standing heritage, committed to supporting the needs of clients right across the spectrum.

A professional partnership.

We are committed to working in partnership with professional advisers, from financial advisers to accountants, solicitors and tax advisers. Our role is to support you; by providing individual investment management solutions giving you more time to advise your clients.

Forward looking investment process.

We focus on delivering personal outcomes. Our aim to meet the needs of clients right across the spectrum. That way we can support all of your clients, not just those with the highest value.

Stable, with a long standing heritage.

Rathbones has been in business since 1742. Our solutions are truly independent, with a forward looking investment process and genuinely active management. We also provide a wide range of additional services.

Constructing and managing discretionary portfolios on behalf of the clients of financial advisory firms has become an important and growing source of new business for Rathbone Investment Management.

Our earliest meaningful relationships with financial advisers can be traced back to the mid 1990s. Since then long-standing connections have been made via the introduction of clients from product providers, the creation of a white labelled discretionary proposition, several strategic partnerships with nationals and networks as well as maintaining panel positions for many regional firms spread across the UK.

Rathbones provides investment services for professional advisory firms seeking to outsource underlying investment decisions. Our range of services cater for all sizes of clients from multi-asset unitised funds available on external platforms to unitised portfolio services, as well as tailored discretionary management for clients typically with larger sums to invest and requiring closer engagement with their wealth. Rathbone Unit Trust Management and its range of retail sector funds can also cater for adviser firms picking their own funds for clients.

However, while our core business is centred on investment management, Rathbones as a group now very much considers itself a wealth management business. The other services we offer include tax* and trusts advice, a specialist tax portfolio service, portfolio lending facilities as well as catering for the specific needs of ethical investors via Rathbone Greenbank Investments. Advisers often use these services to cater for non-everyday scenarios which may arise with their clients, safe in the knowledge they are working alongside an already trusted partner.

*Tax and trust services are provided by Rathbone Trust Company.

Dedicated service and support

We provide support to aid advisers’ due diligence in the initial selection and monitoring of Rathbones as an investment partner. This includes the independent validation of important subjects such as performance through our compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) and submission of data for inclusion in ARC’s Private Client Indices.

Since the start of 2015 we have increased the size of our sales distribution team. Today 12 individuals support advisers choosing to retain fund selection responsibilities as well as those who elect to outsource investment decision making. The team adopt a consultative approach to uncovering the needs of advisers and remain un-conflicted as our range of services accommodate either route. We operate across 13 regional offices as well as London, where our investment sales team provides telephone based support.

Our actively managed multi-asset funds have been designed for advisers seeking to generate a level of return within defined levels of risk for clients with smaller sums to invest. This approach differs from most multi-asset products, which seek to maximise returns against their peers rather than being managed to a client-led volatility expectation.

The universe of underlying assets is wide, providing flexibility to invest in the right places at the right time, rather than focusing solely on traditional asset classes. With an unconstrained mandate operated as a non-UCITS retail scheme (NURS), we also use alternative investments including hedge funds, commodities, private equity and structured products, but always with a strong emphasis on managing risk.

These funds are available for advisers to purchase for their clients either directly from us or via most popular UK platforms. More ›

If you have clients with £25,000 or more to invest and you would like access to a discretionary investment manager who has responsibility for the initial advice and ongoing suitability of the client’s investment, we offer a risk-targeted portfolio service as an effective and efficient way of providing high-quality, multi-asset investment management.

Our Unitised Portfolio Service enables us to deliver some of the hallmarks of more tailored services, namely personal reporting (providing see-through valuations of underlying assets), year-end tax reporting and income payment flexibility.

The underlying investments draw on the same four strategies of the Rathbone multi-asset portfolios and therefore, as funds, bring with them the same Capital Gains Tax (CGT) benefits and focus on managing to risk volatility. More ›

Our Individual Portfolio Service is designed for clients typically with larger sums (£100,000 or more) to invest and who require closer engagement with their wealth. We provide three individual portfolio services at different investment levels (£100,000+, £250,000+ and £750,000+), customised to the diverse and bespoke needs of the individual client.

With an unrestricted choice of investments, our investment managers have the freedom to find the best options for each client’s goals. That includes asset classes, funds and other structures that may not be open to all investors.

Our fees are straightforward. We charge a management fee for all portfolios. There are no additional investment management charges for transactions or administration. A clear estimate of our annual fees will be provided as part of each investment proposal so you and your clients know what to expect. More ›

Our managed portfolio service is offered by Rathbone Investment Management and invests exclusively in the range of Rathbones multi asset portfolio funds (the ‘RMAP’ funds) managed by Rathbone Unit Trust Management Limited (a subsidiary of Rathbone Brothers Plc). Client suitability sits with the financial adviser and our management portfolio service offers your clients access to unconstrained active management by highly experienced fund managers, supported by our proprietary investment process and research team.

There are six strategies to choose from depending on different appetites for risk and return. The RMAP funds that these strategies invest in have successful track records of delivering consistent returns. The strategies appeal to a wide variety of investors and can be held in individual savings accounts (ISAs) and self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs). More ›

Let's start a longer conversation.

You don’t have to make a decision for all of your client base. If you are in any doubt, try with one client first. This is a crowded market with lots of consolidation – nearly 40% of fund management firms* have discretionary assets of £0.5bn or less. Rathbones has nearly £30bn** under management and has been in business since 1742. Visit our website to learn more about the scale of our research capacity and investment expertise.
