The UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) started almost three decades ago, and is a membership organisation committed to growing sustainable and responsible finance in the UK. Aside from running Good Money Week – a highlight in the DISCUS calendar! – it is a pinnacle for ‘all things sustainable’ in investing. We recently sat down with Simon Howard, the Chief Executive at UKSIF, to learn more about Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing and DISCUSs important legislative changes in this area that will have an impact on financial advice businesses.

Watch the video (it’s less than 5 minutes!)

Simon explains the history of UKSIF, how the market has changed, new Environment, Social, and Governance regulations and the benefits of becoming a member of UKSIF. Can’t watch the video? Read on for key highlights.

One of the key points to be made is that climate change and ESG are now firmly on the government’s agenda. New legislation now requires large pension companies to state their ESG policy – including the action they plan to take with regard to climate change.

These important developments and legislative changes stem from the Law Commission who recently announced that all fiduciaries should consider all financial and material factors including ESG and climate change. And very soon, financial advisers will no doubt have to follow suit.

UKSIF sees this type of thinking becoming more prevalent throughout the regulatory community. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will be conducting a consultation on it with respect to contract-based pensions in the first quarter of 2019. UKSIF firmly believe that it is only a matter of time until this thinking is applied to how financial advisers are regulated.

With this in mind, we believe now is the time to start seriously thinking about ESG investing – if you aren’t already.

If you need help on where to start, the good news is that memberships are open for UKSIF. By joining, you will become part of a community that is striving to make a difference while still making a profit.
