Smith & Williamson was founded in 1881. Since then we have managed the financial affairs of private clients and their business interests, combining an independent firm of chartered accountants with an investment management and private banking house.

A service as individual as your clients.

We work closely with advisers and their clients to deliver a bespoke investment strategy and an individual service.

The value of investments may go down as well as up and investors may not get back the original amount invested.

The freedom to explore, to find the best position.

Our Managed Portfolio Service allows our investment managers freedom to explore the whole of the collectives sector, giving advisers a key advantage in meeting their clients’ needs.

The value of investments may go down as well as up and investors may not get back the original amount invested.

Smith & Williamson Investment Management is one of the largest independently-owned private client wealth managers in the UK. Our main activity is private client discretionary fund management (DFM) and we have total assets under management of around £18.2 billion (as at 31 December 2016).

We have a long and successful history of managing portfolios tailored for the needs of private investors, which has been built by developing long-term relationships based on trust and integrity – with both advisers and their clients. We have achieved this by developing a strong service and investment offering and are proud of our performance track record. Our focus is on a collaborative approach with advisers, and we believe this is helped by our similar mindset of being independently-owned and boutique in structure. We work with advisers to ensure that portfolios meet the needs of the client, as putting the client first is the cornerstone of Smith & Williamson’s investment philosophy. We take an active approach to the management of discretionary portfolios using both asset allocation and fund and stock selection to ensure appropriate positioning for prevailing economic and market conditions. Our analysis is driven by valuations and fundamentals; we also operate in a collegiate manner with over 160 investment managers who all contribute to our investment process and implementation.

Our discretionary fund management service offers bespoke portfolio management for private clients. We understand that every client is different and we work closely with advisers to ensure there is alignment with the clients’ suitability needs, risk appetite and financial objectives. The relationship between the investment manager, adviser and client is of paramount importance in understanding the needs of the client and we aim to build a strong working relationship with trust and integrity at the core. Managing an investment portfolio is a complex challenge, requiring continuous monitoring and research. Our MPS is designed to address this. We offer six models, all risk-rated by Distribution Technology and 5 star Defaqto rated. Our MPS portfolios are actively managed and built using a range of investments from open-ended funds (OEICS, unit trusts) to investment companies and exchange traded funds (ETFs), ensuring diversification by asset class and product type, giving our managers additional flexibility to respond to changing market conditions. Shares in a listed AIM company are currently recognised as ‘unquoted’ shares for tax purposes. Because of this, an individual investing in AIM shares can potentially benefit from business property relief (BPR), which can provide 100% relief from inheritance tax (IHT), provided the shares have been held for a total of no less than two years at the time of death. Our AIM portfolio service is for clients investing £50,000 or more. We aim to deliver a balanced mix of companies, diversified across industry areas, with more defensive characteristics than the average AIM company. Learn more ›

How to select a Managed Portfolio Service (MPS)

With over 75 providers of MPS available, how do you begin to go about selecting the right ones for your clients? Most adviser firms will construct a small panel of DFMs typically consisting of somewhere from three to six. In Mickey Morrissey’s opinion, it is important that these providers complement each other, rather than replicate what they do, so at least there is a chance they will not all perform in a similar fashion when the markets go up, or importantly, when they go down!
